Members of the Batley Business and Retail Association (BBRA) asked Kirklees Parks and Open Spaces team to plant the flower beds in the town centre in complementary red and white in honour of the day.

They also arranged for pupils from Batley Parish School to visit the Market Place to recycle their used cans in a specially made dragon shaped bin which was created by Kit & Kaboodle of Batley.

Charnocks Bakers gave away buns with red crosses on white icing and several of the organisers dressed as knights in shining armour.

Brearleys Solicitors organised a prize draw to win an England strip of the winners choice and there was a competition to find the secret square on a dragon template marked out in the Market Place. The prizes, a cuddly dragon and an MP3 player were donated by Brearleys and Charnocks Bakers.

The event raised almost £200 for the family support charity Homestart.

Jane Snook, Chair of the BBRA and owner of The Flower Shop said, "We wanted to revive a tradition that has perhaps been lost. The event celebrated St George's Day, raising money for Homestart and promoting recycling. We're hoping to make it an annual event."
