Staff from the retail team at Kirkwood Hospice and students from Kirklees College are delighted to announce a joint initiative to give the Hospice shop in Corporation Street, Dewsbury a face lift.

Susan Marsden – one of the Hospice's Retail Coordinators – came up with the idea earlier this year when watching the successful BBC2 series ‘Mary Queen of Charity Shops' when a leading retail expert rose to the challenge of transforming the public image of charity shops into one of a living, giving, must-stop shop.

Susan said, "After watching the television programme and noticing the interest it was creating locally, and in the charity retailing industry, I decided to try the College to see if we could do something similar in Dewsbury. The response was terrific and there is now a team of three students assigned to our shop looking at creatively redesigning areas such as layout, merchandising and window displays."

Susan went onto say "The students have also taken away donated items which they are looking to re-work into creative one-off pieces. We'd like the people of Dewsbury to keep their eyes open and come along to our shop in the coming weeks to find out exactly what has been going on."

Kirkwood Hospice cares for local people who have a life-threatening illness, for example cancer or severe lung disease. Although we are based in Huddersfield we care for people from all over the Kirklees area, including Dewsbury, Batley, Cleckheaton, Heckmondwike, and Mirfield. The Hospice's team of multi-disciplinary health care professionals provide care for patients at the Hospice and support for people living in their own home or in a nursing home.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters all of our care is provided free of charge. For information on how you could help the Hospice please call the Fundraising Department on 01484 557911.
