‘Working in partnership with small retailers to reduce crime'

Kirklees Council, through Safer Stronger Communities Service, has been successful in securing funding of £49,644 from the Home Office to improve community safety and support small retailers* in Batley, Birstall and Dewsbury. This funding will be used to purchase security equipment in order to help reduce the impact of crime following the recession.

The fund has the aims of: • Reducing the risk of crimes against businesses in the priority areas; • Supporting small retailers who have been affected adversely by crime in the last 2 years; • Strengthening local retail partnerships to work collectively to reduce crime and disorder

To be eligible for this fund, retailers* must: • Have no more than 3 shops/ retail outlets which are each less than 280 sq metres; and • have fewer than 10 staff working in each store at any one time

The following are examples of businesses who do not qualify as retailers* for this grant fund: • Restaurants, bars, pubs, cafes and takeaways • Hairdressers, manicurists or beauticians • Dentists, doctors or opticians • Sales of motor vehicles or motor vehicle parts • Wholesalers

The closing date for all applications is Friday 19th February 2010.

All applications received by this date will be considered by a panel of representatives from Kirklees Council, West Yorkshire Police, Batley Business and Retail Association, Dewsbury Chamber of Trade and Dewsbury Retail Forum.

We will write to you by 26th February to let you know if your application has been successful.

  • A retailer sells goods or commodities directly to the consumer (e.g. household, retail, newspapers, fruit and vegetable and other foods) from a fixed premise.
