Economic development & regeneration

Kirklees Council has made a strong commitment to the regeneration of Batley, Dewsbury and surrounding areas. They have identified a package of support for the area which complements exsisting investment and will drive further development in the future. This includes improvements to road networks, new housing initatives and a wider masterplan for the area which has been produced with external consultants GVA Grimley.

Below are details of just some of the activities that are part of this work.

Grants are available until March 2010 to improve the external appearance of commercial properties in Dewsbury. Grants are available for properties both in the town centre and located on the major routes into town, including junction of Webster Hill and Aldams Road, the Bradford Road corridor, Bond Street and businesses located in the triangle of Wellington Street, Wellington Road and Nelson Street.

Applications are considered on a first come first served basis.

Businesses are encouraged to discuss their proposals informally before submitting an application. Regeneration of Dewsbury Market

Dewsbury Market is an award-winning market hall which attracts thousands of visitors each year. Following the successful refurbishment of the Market Hall, completed in December 2007, it is now proposed to carry this on with a full refurbishment programme to bring the rest of the market up to the same standard. Improvements will include refurbishment of the semi-covered market, open stalls, Fish Block and toilets, as well as including security measures, lighting, electrical overhaul and public realm. Subject to Kirklees Council Cabinet and Planning decisions it is intended to start on site in July 2009 for completion by April 2010.
