"To visit Dewsbury without going to the market on Market Day is like going to Blackpool and not looking at the sea"
Dewsbury Reporter 1953
A firm favourite with coach parties and visitors to the town Dewsbury Market is a superb destination for a day out. Coaches from across the North head for Dewsbury Market every week filled with avid shoppers who return regularly to sample the delights of this famous market.
What's On?
Market Hall
Monday – Saturday (half-day Tuesday): The fabulous Victorian Market Hall was the focal point of trading in Dewsbury when it was built in 1904. When it became full, traders expanded to create what is now the covered and open market. Today it is home to 38 permanent market stalls with an extensive range of fine foods and produce. Fresh meat and dairy produce, flowers, clothing and household items, together with the famous tripe stall ensure the Market Hall is as popular now as it was when it was built over 100 years ago.
General Market
Wednesday and Saturday: The largest and most renowned open market in Yorkshire. Dewsbury's famous open market boasts over 300 bustling stalls on general market days. Meander through the aisles and you can be sure to find almost everything you need and many things you never knew you needed. Both locals and visitors spend hours browsing the delights on offer throughout the market.
Second-hand Market
Friday: Whilst not on the immense scale of general market days, the second-hand market offers a tantalising array of goods with around 100 stalls each Friday.
Car Bootless Sale
Sunday: One man's trash is another man's treasure' and this is certainly the case on Sundays. Crowds flock here each Sunday searching for that bargain hidden amongst the thousands of items on sale. Or why not come along with your unwanted goods and take home an empty car and full wallet.
Dewsbury Market the History and Heritage
Dewsbury Market hailed as one of the finest in the north was first established in the area in 1318. A Market Charter was granted by King Edward 11 to hold a weekly market at nearby Thornhill. The market then moved to the thriving Dewsbury town centre.
When a plague swept through the area in 1583 it effectively closed down all trading and the market ceased to operate. In 1740 the market was re- established due to public demand and in 1904 the magnificent Market Hall was built. The traders who previously occupied the area in the town centre Market Place moved towards the fine architecture of the Market Hall. The area was famous as the "Heavy Woollen District" due to the manufacture of quality blanket, coats and military uniform, the street through the Open market area known as Cloth Hall Street reflects this era of history in the area.
Today the market reflects a combination of the elegance of the Market Hall Grade 11 Listed Building together with a large bright open market part of which is housed beneath a glass roof. Further modernisation which developed in the 1980s and 1990s complement the area resulting in a large thriving market attractive to todays discerning shopper.
The market today shows how traditional values of service, quality, and fair prices are the recipe for the successful, busy market we have today. Dewsbury Market not only provides an invaluable service to the local shopping public but is also a well known destination for coach parties.
