This Elizabethan Manor House has delighted visitors for centuries. Charlotte Bronte visited it in the 19th century and it made such an impression on her that she featured it as Fieldhead - the home of the heroine in her novel "Shirley".
The Hall was built in 1583 but is now set out as it would have been in the 1690's. A mixture of authentic and reproduction furnishings, from intricately carved four poster beds to pots and cooking utensils in the kitchen, provide a real insight into late 17th Century life.
Outside a formal 17th century garden has been recreated with octagonal knot gardens, a pole hedge, a variety of period roses and 1300 box hedges in geometric patterns inspired by the wood and plaster designs inside the hall.
Much of the work on the gardens has been carried out by The Friends of Oakwell Hall, a group of dedicated volunteers who have thoroughly researched the history of the gardens in order to acurrately reproduce the style and design of the original garden to include authentic and original plants such as Rosa Damascene (The Damask Rose) and Rosa Mundi.
Oakwell Hall is set in 110 acres of the original estate, now managed as a country park. The site boasts excellent visitor facilities, a cafe, a well stocked shop and an adventure playground.
Regular events include historical re-enactments, atmospheric candle lit tours, a Summer Fair and a wide range of family events. See our events listings for further details.
