Work gets underway on Batley Town Hall
4 Aug 2009 - Work is now underway on a massive refurbishment programme at Batley Town Hall.
Kirklees Council are investing £1.4m to transform this popular venue. This will include £800,000 for exterior work to make the building watertight plus £600,000 for internal improvement works. Work will be carried out by Bramall Construction Limited and is set to be completed in December of this year.
Work commenced on Sunday July 19. There will be a phased programme of improvement work beginning with the Market Square side of the building, followed by Commercial Street and finally Brunswick Street.
The refurbishment programme will include stonework cleaning and re-pointing including stone replacement and repair. Roof repairs and overhaul will include re-roofing the old court building. The external guttering and downpipes will be replaced and there will be an overhaul of the windows and doors.
The improvements will make sure that the building is wind and watertight. It should also become more energy efficient as a result of improved insulation and secondary glazing. Old light fittings will be removed from the frontage and more energy efficient festive lighting will be installed. Officers are also exploring ways in which to floodlight the newly refurbished building in order to show off its features.
Cleckheaton, Dewsbury and Huddersfield Town Halls have also been allocated funding for building improvements. The works have been designed and are being managed by Aedas Building Consultancy of Huddersfield.
