Dewsbury Town Hall hosts the Kirklees Green Business Awards

The judges chose FMG Support from Huddersfield for the top prize, Kirklees Green Business of the Year award. FMG impressed the judges with the efforts they have made to reduce their energy consumption, increase the amount they recycle and reduce the chances of pollution from their site. Most impressive of all was the way that they have involved their staff in every step they’ve taken to become more sustainable.

Cummins and Grace Landscapes were named Green Business of the Year, (Cummins for South Kirklees and Grace Landscapes for North). The judges were impressed by Cummins, and particularly by their efforts to reduce their energy use, with initiatives including using solar power and solar hot water. Grace Landscapes were particularly strong on recycling and reducing their transport emissions.

For South Kirklees, Camira Fabrics came second and Titanic Spa were given the third prize. For North Kirklees, second place went to Chemfix and third to Parker Hannifin.

The award for the Best Waste Reduction Initiative went to Dr Reddy’s – recognised for their 92.55% diversion of waste from landfill, which was partly achieved by recovering an organic solvent used in manufacturing process that was previously sent to landfill.

Tourist spot Holmfirth Vineyard won the award for Best Energy Reduction Initiative. The judges were impressed by what the vineyard has achieved on its new visitor centre and restaurant which not only uses wind energy, solar hot water, and Ground Source Heat Pumps, but also building to a very high, low energy, Passivhaus standard.

Guests were treated to an evening reception, with a welcome speech from Leader of the Council, Cllr Mehboob Khan about the work Kirklees Council is doing to tackle C02 Emissions. This includes the support given through Green Business Network, residents schemes such as Warm Zone Re-Charge and Suncities and the reduction of carbon emissions from the Council’s own stock of buildings.

Cllr Mehboob Khan said: “It’s great to see so many businesses improving their green credentials, whether it’s increasing recycling or reducing the waste and pollution that their business generates – we’re extremely supportive of their efforts and hope that they continue to strive for sustainability.

“We are proud of our green credentials here in Kirklees and I hope that other businesses are inspired by the efforts of their peers and that we see even more great entries at next year’s awards.”
