River Calder Pathway Clearance Underway
One of the members of the Dewsbury In Bloom Committee noticed that an overgrown pathway area along side the River Calder in the centre of town was in need of some tender loving care. She said that if renovated this area could provide a wonderful haven for locals and visitors to the town alike, whilst also contributing towards improving the look of the town centre.
Local group, the Kirklees Friends of the Environment have taken a lead role in this project and have been working closely with the In Bloom Team to put together a funding bid to the BBC Breathing Places initiative, which offers up to £10,000 towards this kind of project.
The plan is to create a space in the centre of Dewsbury which will be a haven for wildlife, for native plant species and a also place where people can relax and enjoy the environment.
We would like to achieve enough funding to create seating areas and to renovate the pathway.
We would also like to involve local schools in the design of the planting schemes which we will create. So if your school is interested in helping with this project (subject to the funding being achieved) please give us a call on 01924 324660 or email us from our contact page.
The Kirklees Library Service have strongly endorsed this project and once created will use the new "Breathing Place" as a venue for story telling sessions.
The ongoing maintenance of the plants within the area will be an issue in the future and to address this we would like to form "The Friends of the Riverbank" as a group of local volunteers who are willing to devote a little time each month to maintaining this area.
