Sea creatures from Sarruga to appear at Dewsbury Spirit

Kirklees Council has announced that this year’s Spirit event will once again feature the fantastic mechanical animals of Spanish performers Sarruga.

Sarruga wowed audiences with their fire-breathing dragons two years ago and will be making a return appearance to the town on Friday February 24.

This year’s show, called ‘Peixos’, is a water-themed spectacle featuring magical shoals of fish, jellyfish, whales and sharks. Over 45 minutes, spectators follow a procession of underwater discovery which leads to a thrilling climax with the appearance of a rather menacing shark – complete with snapping jaws and fearsome teeth!

The show will begin at 7.30pm with a procession around the town centre streets, before heading to Longcauseway for the final showdown in front of the Town Hall.
Cllr Jean Calvert, Lead Cabinet Member for Health, Well Being and Communities said: “Since it began in 2008, Spirit has grown into a wonderful family event, featuring internationally renowned theatre companies. Sarruga’s Dragons were extremely popular when they visited Dewsbury a few years ago and I’m told that this show is another crowd-pleaser.”

“It’s a great free event and one I’d urge everyone to come and enjoy. And while the show is suitable for all ages, parents should be vigilant and not allow children to get too close to the shark, as we can’t guarantee when he had his last meal!”

Spirit takes place in Dewsbury each year and has grown since it first began in 2008. The event sees international theatre companies perform in the town to huge crowds.

More details including the procession route will be available on http://www.kirklees.gov.uk/spirit from early February.
