Switched On in Style!

3 Dec 2007 - Batley Christmas Lights Celebrations

Batley saw a multi-talented line up of music and dance on Thursday with a colourful switch on of the Christmas lights in the Market Place.

The day kicked off late afternoon with Santa's Grotto Igloo and an energetic selection of Fairground rides and attractions. Local business Charnock's Bakery were also out on the Market Place to serve up Pie and Peas and traditional warm Mince Pies, along with Soups and Hot dogs too.

The Pulse Radio were later in place to allow a variety of performers to take to the stage with a colourful combination of musical acts and vibrant dance routines. First up were Batley Music School with a selection of wonderful Christmas carols to warm the crowds as they gathered, followed by a heartening performance by Carnival X Factor winner Alan Markham-Smith.

We were soon after treated to performers of all ages from the Sarah Taylor School of Dance, showing their variety of modern movements and contemporary styles along with a colourful array of costumes.

With the light switch on drawing closer, a festive performance of popular hits and Christmas classics by Rowetta, ITV X Factor finalist gave the crowds chance to sing along and savour the moment.

The Christmas window display competition results were announced, and the winner for this year was Sharpe Glass China and Gifts in the Market Place, with The Flower Shop and Whaleys Opticians runners up.

The winners of this years Christmas Light Design Competition included Chloe Scrutton, Ryan Abbott, and Stuart Parkinson. Special thanks went to Batley Area Committee for their generosity towards the cost of the new lights.

At 6.30pm, Santa, Rowetta and the Mayor of Kirklees Councillor Jean Calvert lead the countdown to produce a magical display of lights and colours mixed with cheer and happy faces.

All in all, this years Switch On was a wonderful combination of music, dance and colour, and has seen Christmas in Batley off to a fantastic start.
