The Big Wild Read
Every year nationwide there is a reading scheme for children which is run all Kirklees libraries. The theme of this year's Summer Reading Challenge, called The Big Wild Read, is the environment. As a reward for signing up to the scheme every child will be given a packet of wild seeds, all native species, to plant. In Kirklees the reading challenge is further supported by a series of events which again are aimed at raising an awareness of the environment amongst children.
At Dewsbury & Batley Libraries the activities include ‘Wild about Walking' to encourage children to ‘get out and about, ‘Wild n' Wiggly' about composting and wormeries, and ‘Grass seed heads' all about seed planting. There is also a ‘Big Wild Read' website which has lots of fun games and information again with environmental theme.
